Sanitation Harthal

May 24, 2026

Under the name “Sanitation Harthal”, the pre-monsoon sanitation activities for this year in the Grama Panchayat began with the Koppam Town Cleaning Campaign at 8:00 AM on 16.05.2026. The initiative aims to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season and thereby control the breeding of mosquitoes and the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, and chikungunya, as well as other communicable diseases. These are preventive sanitation and disease-control activities carried out in advance.

The State Government, under the leadership of Local Self Government Institutions, the Health Department, and the Suchitwa Mission, organizes large-scale public campaigns every year.

According to Panchayat President Smt. T. V. Valsala, the pre-monsoon sanitation activities are planned to be implemented in three stages:

1. Household Level (Activities at Home)

Source Elimination: Remove all objects that can collect stagnant water in and around the house, such as coconut shells, plastic cups, discarded tyres, and other containers.

Dry Day: Observe every Sunday as a Dry Day. Clean and empty water-holding containers weekly, such as refrigerator trays, flower pot trays, and flower vases.

Waste Management: Segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and hand it over to the Haritha Karma Sena.

2. Institutional Level

Educational Institutions & Offices: Ensure that no stagnant water remains in and around schools, colleges, and government or private offices.

Construction Sites: Special care must be taken to prevent water accumulation at building construction sites to avoid mosquito breeding.

3. Public Level (Ward / Local Government Level)

Drains and Water Channels: Clean drainage systems, streams, and other water channels to ensure the smooth flow of water.

Waste Collection Centers: Relocate inorganic waste collection centers such as MCFs (Material Collection Facilities) from flood-prone areas to safer locations.

Ward-Level Squads: Form and coordinate sanitation squads led by Kudumbashree units, ASHA workers, and resident associations to carry out cleaning activities.
